Moderator note

Dear Moderator,
My brief for my AS Media was to create a Front Cover, Contents Page and Double Page spread for a new music magazine. I chose to do my music magazine on a pop based genre due to recent rends causing a higher demand for this genre of music magazine, therefore, in order to supply to an ever demanding audience, I wanted to give the preferred audience of both males and females between the ages of 14-20, a new and up to date magazine in which they can effectively voice their views on what the magazine will contain.
I have used labels on my blog to make it easily navigable in order to find what you are looking for.
Yours Sincerely,
Rhys Butchart, Edgbarrow School.

Front cover analysis- The Magazine header is put nicely in the top left corner and is blended to the image. This effectively draws attention to the main artist on the front cover.
In this section of the cover there are a number of pugs placed to let the reader know who features within the magazine. These draw the reader in, making them aware of the magazines contents and overall makes them inclined to purchase the edition.
The main title blends itself nicely with the magazine as it has a controlled professional matching colour scheme which makes the cover easy to navigate and read
Barcode strategically placed to give the cover as much space as possible for the titles and image
This little section gives slightly more info about the magazine which makes the reader want to read more to find out the full story.

Double page spread-Text is formatted perfectly in columns to create an enjoyable easy to read section for the consumer.
The picture is in black and white which helps match the colour scheme on the front cover which creates a link to the artist’s importance throughout the magazine.
At the bottom of the page there is another banner to express a quote that acts as a summary for the page which is particularly effective as it draws the reader in well.
Large picture helps set the focus on the desired artist in this case the title artist Kendrick Lamar.

Contents A-The logo and contents have been made in into a very aesthetic column which helps make the layout easier for the user to read and also leaves more room for the image to be noticed and appreciated.
This image helps to keep the theme from the front cover due to the colour scheme and scale of the picture.
The column sticks to the desired colour scheme well and also is formatted in a way which allows the reader to navigate the page effectively

Both Contents-Both these styles of contents are very different for one magazine which helps segregate the sections of the magazine effectively.

Contents B-The magazine logo still features on the page along with the page title in order to show who the magazine is for and to allow you to see what the whole pages purpose is.
The text still is fitting to an orderly structure and the magazine colours of red are still featured as the page numbers which helps to keep the theme flowing throughout the publishing.
The large image is suitably placed and sized to be large enough to fill the blank page but not too big to allow for all the necessary text to be placed next to it.

Did you plan your magazine? If not, what have you learnt about the importance of research and planning?
I personally didn’t plan my magazine because I didn’t know hot use the program we made them on properly s if I had planned my pages I wouldn’t have realistically been able to achieve them. Now I have started to develop some level of skill on the program then I am now able to plan things in advance which will mean I have objectives to meet which will make my time management better.
What technology did you use to complete the task and how did you use it?
I used serif page plus to complete the set task and I used it in many ways in order to create a hopefully aesthetically pleasing front cover and a contents.  I used all the tools and options on the program in order to try and experiment and learn in practice how to use the application effectively.
Did you encounter any difficulties? If so, what were they and how did you overcome them?
When making the front cover and contents page, I encountered several challenges purely because it was my first time using the software so I did not know everything I needed to in order to make the pages look good. If I didn’t know how to do something I would either research how to do it online or seek advice from a peer or teacher.
How successful was your magazine? Please identify what worked well, and with hindsight, what would you improve/do differently?
My magazine wasn’t the greatest because it was a task that was set in order to try new things on the program and I have successfully achieved the task of learning and developing my skills on serif. In order to improve my pages I would take more suitable pictures that could be adapted to a magazine easier and also develop the text sizing in order to effectively cover my page.
What have you learnt from completing this task? Looking ahead, how will this learning be significant when completing the rest of your foundation coursework, do you think?

I have learnt a lot about the applications I will be using during this prelim task. This will help me tremendously when creating the real tasks because I now know so much more about the programs I will be using. By knowing about the program this also gives me the opportunity to plan more effectively as I now know what I can and can’t do.
